HOW TO DEAL WITH COMMON PLUMBING ISSUES

Plumbing Tips

As a homeowner, you’re bound to face plumbing issues at one point or another. While you can always call a plumber, knowing how to take care of minor problems yourself is useful. Here are some general plumbing tips from Waterloo-based Tiger Plumbing.

Tips from your Waterloo plumbers

Here are common plumbing issues and how to fix them.

Clogged toilet

Before using a plunger on a clogged toilet, turn the shut-off valve to the off position. This will prevent accidental flushes, which could cause an overflow. Place the bell of the plunger over the drain and push the air into the toilet. Repeat until you feel the clog dislodge.

Slow-draining pipes

If you notice that all the drains in a room are working slowly, it might mean the pipes going to that room are clogged. One way to identify the problem is to have a video line inspection of your plumbing system. Our plumber will use a rod with a high-resolution camera attached to the end of it to snake through your plumbing system and find the issue.

Clogged drains

Hair, soap chips and food residue are common causes of clogged drains. You may be able to spot the problem with a simple visual inspection. To remove the blockage, use a straightened wire hanger with a small hook at the end to scoop out whatever’s clogging the drain.

Poor water pressure

In many cases, poor water pressure is caused by a dirty faucet aerator, which is the fitting that’s screwed to the end of most taps. Aerators prevent splashing and help conserve water.

Prevention is key

Prevention is the best way to avoid issues. Keep your drains and pipes clean and free of substances that can cause slow drainage and blockages. Never flush anything other than human waste or toilet paper, even if the product packaging claims it’s flushable. Oil, fat, cooking grease and coffee grounds will all clog drains, so never pour them down sink. You can also use a screen or drain grate to stop hair, food scraps and other substances from creating a blockage.
